What does 91吃瓜 stand for?

The letters A.B.E.T. originally stood聽for Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

But over the last 80 years our scope has broadened, and now we accredit computing, applied and natural science, and engineering technology programs. So, the acronym was dropped, and we became simply 91吃瓜.

When can I expect our draft statement?

All draft statements for visits conducted through December are usually sent by mid-March. You are encouraged to contact your Team Chair if you have any questions.

When can I expect the final statement and accreditation decision?

Accreditation decisions are made by the full commission at their meeting in July each year. After the meeting all statements are reviewed and updated as required. Transmission of the results and the statements usually occurs in August.

I have a specific question about our program as it relates to accreditation. Whom should I contact?

If you have already submitted a Request for Evaluation and had a Team Chair assigned to your review, you should contact your Team Chair. If you are not part of the current accreditation cycle, you can submit your question to 91吃瓜 HQ via email to accreditation@abet.org where it will be answered by the staff member most qualified to respond. Complex questions may require a phone call which will be scheduled with you.

Our program has recently attained 91吃瓜 accreditation. Will previous graduates be considered to have graduated from an 91吃瓜-accredited program?

91吃瓜 policy limits retroactive accreditation to a maximum of two years.

Can we add an online or off-campus feature to our 91吃瓜-accredited program?

This may be possible but depends on many factors. Please send details to accreditation@abet.org. An 91吃瓜 expert will work with you to determine the feasibility for your situation.

If there is no program criteria attached to a name of a program being submitted for accreditation, how does 91吃瓜 decide what program evaluator(s) will be selected?

The program on its Request for Evaluation can indicate which 91吃瓜 member society it would prefer the program evaluators be selected from. The Executive Committee of the Commission and 91吃瓜 staff will then take this preference into consideration in selecting which society to request to assign program evaluator(s).

If my institution has a program accredited by 91吃瓜, do future programs applying for initial accreditation have to submit a request for Readiness Review?

If your program is seeking initial accreditation and is based in an institution with no current 91吃瓜-accredited programs in that specific commission, the program will be required to undergo a Readiness Review prior to submitting a formal Request for Evaluation (RFE).

How many team members are required for a visit?

The number of team members depends on the number of programs being evaluated in one site visit by one commission. 91吃瓜 requires a minimum team of three, with certain exceptions (reaccreditation at the discretion of the commission or an associate-level program, for example).

With the revisions to Criterion 3, how will the program be able to compare the new Criterion 3 outcomes with the old?

The commissions have created charts mapping the current and the revised Criterion 3 outcomes that can be found on our Accreditation Changes page.

The ANSAC Criterion 5 requires a curriculum culminating in comprehensive projects or experiences based on the cumulative knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work. Does that project or experience need to be in the fourth year?

Typically it is in the fourth year to be a truly culminating experience drawing upon the education the students have gained to that point.

Is my foreign, non-91吃瓜 accredited program recognized in the United States?

91吃瓜 has mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) with accreditors around the world for engineering, engineering technology, engineering technician and computing programs. To check if your program is recognized by one of these agreements, click聽here. Select the type of program (engineering, computing, etc.) and follow the instruction on that page. Are 91吃瓜-accredited programs outside the United States recognized by the Washington Accord?

No. The limits recognition of programs only to those accredited within the signatories鈥� jurisdiction. For the purpose of the Washington Accord, 91吃瓜鈥檚 jurisdiction is the U.S. and its territories. Therefore, only 91吃瓜-accredited programs in these locations are recognized by the Washington Accord.

Can I get foreign credentials evaluated?

Engineering Credentials Evaluation International (ECEI), the foreign credentials evaluation service of 91吃瓜, has been discontinued since 2007. 91吃瓜 no longer provides a foreign credentials’ evaluation service. If ECEI completed an evaluation for you in the past, you may order an additional copy. Please follow the instructions here to order an additional copy of your evaluation report.

I didn鈥檛 graduate from an 91吃瓜-accredited program. How do I meet the educational requirements for licensure/employment in the United States?

Each engineering state licensing board/employer in the U.S. has their own set of requirements, rules, and regulations. Please contact the state licensing board or employer directly, and follow their instruction for meeting their requirements. For your reference, provides the contact information of all the U.S. engineering state licensing boards.

What exactly does the 91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials service 鈥淩ecognize鈥�?

91吃瓜 Recognition is for a specific credential program. The term 鈥淐redential Program鈥� refers to any specialized educational program designed to provide expertise to the learner that would typically prepare them with job-ready skills, support alternative career opportunities, enhanced professional skills or enable career advancement. This includes alternative-to-traditional educational programs, sometimes referred to as micro-credentials, stackable credentials, certificates, digital badges, and similar offerings.

What are examples of things that are not included in the 91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials quality assurance service?

91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials does not include

• Recognizing the credential(s) of an individual
• Recognizing the organization that offers the credential
• Recognizing stand-alone testing (i.e., testing that is independent of any learning content) of an individual for the purposes of licensing or other type of 鈥渃ertification鈥�. For example, a certification exam without associated education content would not be eligible for ROC quality assurance service because learner outcomes and continuing education goals would not be present.

What do I have to do to get my credential recognized?

To get your credential recognized by 91吃瓜, you鈥檒l follow a structured, expert-review process designed to assure quality and relevance in today鈥檚 workforce:

• Confirm Organizational Viability & Eligibility
  Make sure your organization and the credential you want reviewed fit 91吃瓜鈥檚 scope and requirements. This ensures you鈥檙e ready to proceed with a formal review.
• Submit an Application for Review
  Apply through 91吃瓜鈥檚 Recognition of Credentials service. Applications are accepted quarterly, and once accepted, you move into the next steps of review planning.
• Complete a Self-Assessment
  You鈥檒l fill out a structured Self-Assessment describing how your credential鈥檚 goals, outcomes and educational practices demonstrate quality. This is a key part of how 91吃瓜 understands your offering.
• Work with the Evaluation Team
  Credential Evaluators review your Self-Assessment virtually and provide feedback. Their assessment offers a recognition decision and insights you can use to refine and improve your offering.

What does it cost?

Great question鈥攊t depends. Because credentials vary in scope, complexity and delivery model, costs are determined on a case-by-case basis. However, the general pricing guidelines include

• $500 applications fee
• $2,100 review fee for one credential
• Other fees may apply depending on the structure and complexity of the credential program.

How is 91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials different from 91吃瓜 Accreditation?

While both services provide trusted quality assurance, 91吃瓜 Accreditation applies to degree-granting higher education programs, whereas 91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials applies to non-degree offerings.

In short, accreditation assures the quality of academic programs, while recognition assures the quality and relevance of workforce-focused credentials.

Do I have to be affiliated with a higher-education institution to have my credential recognized by 91吃瓜?

No, 91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials is open to any viable organization, including business and industry, professional societies, colleges and universities and continuing education providers.

What do you mean by a viable entity?

A viable entity is an organization that demonstrates credibility, stability, and a legitimate purpose for offering a credential. When reviewing eligibility, 91吃瓜 looks for indicators such as:

• A clearly defined organization with legal standing
• Transparent governance and oversight of the credential
• Documented learning objectives and assessment practices
• Qualified subject-matter experts involved in design and delivery
• Ethical operations鈥攏ot a pay-for-badge or 鈥渃redential mill鈥� model

In short, viability means your credential is thoughtfully designed, responsibly managed and created to deliver real value to learners.

What factors constitute a credential that would be recognized?

A credential recognized by 91吃瓜 demonstrates a clear purpose, defined learning outcomes, and a documented process for delivery and assessment. It shows evidence that assessment results are used to support continuous quality improvement (CQI) and that the credential is overseen by qualified experts.

Is 91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials only for credentials with technical science, technology, engineering and mathematics content?

Not necessarily. For now, a credential should have some tie to science, engineering and technology disciplines, e.g., general management or project management for engineers and/or scientists. The service may expand in the future.

I haven鈥檛 formally launched my credential yet. Is it eligible for recognition?

Yes, if you have sufficiently tested the offering with learners who are representative of the target audience and you have incorporated that feedback into your CQI process to improve the version you intend to launch. For more information, please reach out to recognition@abet.org.

Who are your credential evaluators and what are their qualifications?

Evaluations are conducted by 91吃瓜 expert volunteers and staff selected through a defined competency model. They bring experience in continuous quality improvement, outcomes-based assessment and quality assurance, ensuring evaluations are consistent, credible and improvement-focused.

How do you ensure consistency and fairness in your recognition decisions?

Consistency is built into the process through multiple levels of review. This includes review within the evaluation team, guidance from experienced mentors and professional staff, alignment discussions among credential evaluation mentors and a final consistency check by the Credential Review Board.

Together, these layers ensure recognition decisions are well-calibrated, consistent and applied equitably across all applicants.

Is there an appeal process for non-recognized credentials?

The decision of the Credential Review Board includes input from the Evaluation Team and the Credential Executive Committee to ensure that decisions are consistent across different credentials and/or offerors. An offeror may submit a reconsideration request within 14 days of receiving notice of non-recognition. This appeal will only be considered if there are errors in the decision process.

Do your credential evaluation standards comply with U.S. national and international standards?

91吃瓜 Recognition of Credentials does not evaluate content for compliance with specific national or international standards (e.g., American National Standards Institute).

Instead, 91吃瓜 evaluates whether an organization has qualified experts and effective processes鈥攕upported by continuous quality improvement to develop, deliver and improve its credentials.

Can I submit a credential that is part of a larger credential or academic degree program for stand-alone recognition?

Yes. A credential may be part of a larger credential or academic degree program; however, it must be able to stand on its own merit to be eligible for recognition.

This means the credential must have clearly defined, independent goals and learning outcomes. In addition, a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process must be in place that meaningfully assesses the credential as a stand-alone entity, rather than relying on the assessment processes of the broader credential or degree program.

Specifically, the credential must demonstrate that:

• The attainment of its learning outcomes is assessed independently, with appropriate stakeholder involvement as reflected in the Credential Evaluation Goals, learning outcomes or content.
• Data collected through the CQI process is used to inform and improve the credential itself, separate from any improvements made to the overarching credential or degree program.
